Project Veterinarian
Medical care must be provided for all animals involved in research and teaching. The name of the individual who will serve as the veterinarian for the project/course is requested on the Protocol Review Form. The LAR veterinary staff is available to provide care. Other veterinarians may also serve as the project veterinarian if they: - are available to observe the animals at regular, frequent intervals during the acclimation and experimental periods
- are available for examination and treatment of spontaneous disease/injury and protocol related conditions
- have appropriate diagnostic services and methods of treatment available
- have a current license to practice veterinary medicine
If the PI for the project is a veterinarian he/she may also wish to serve as project veterinarian. Federal animal welfare agencies view this as a conflict of interest. The IACUC will, however, approve the PI as the project veterinarian if medical records for the animals are maintained in the animal rooms and the animals are regularly observed by an LAR veterinarian or another veterinarian meeting the above criteria for the project veterinarian.
