The LAR staff consists of the Director, two clinical veterinarians, three veterinary technicians, and about 35 animal care and support staff members. Members of the veterinary staff are available to provide veterinary care to all university owned animals from 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. Monday-Friday. A veterinary staff member is on call on a rotational basis during non-office working hours, weekends and holidays. LAR animal caretakers observe and provide care to each laboratory animal daily, and report to the veterinary staff any illness, injury, or death. In addition, animals in each LAR facility are observed at least weekly by the veterinary staff. Upon receiving a report of a sick or injured animal(s), an LAR veterinarian examines the animal(s) and consults with the principal investigator (PI) or individuals the PI has indicated as having the authority to approve veterinary care or euthanasia. If the PI or his/her designees cannot be reached in a timely manner, an LAR veterinarian will determine the best course of action. LAR veterinarians oversee the quarantine and conditioning programs for laboratory animals. Treatments are carried out by the veterinary staff or animal caretakers under the direction of an LAR veterinarian, unless other arrangements are made with the PI in advance.
